How many moles of phosphoric acid are there in 658 grams of phosphoric acid?
Good Day...
Problem:
How many moles of phosphoric acid are there in 658 grams of phosphoric acid?
Note: the molar mas of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) is 97.994 g/mol
but some teachers tries to round off the atomic weight of elements to whole number.
H (hydrogen) = 1 amu × 3 = 3 amu
P(phosphorus) = 31 amu × 1 = 31 amu
O (oxygen) = 16 amu × 4 = 64 amu
98 amu
Molar mass is = = 98 g / mol in whole number
I will solved the problem using molar mass of 98 g/mol and 97.994 g/mol
Given Data:
658 grams phosphoric acid = ________moles of phosphoric acid
Solution:
To convert mass in grams to moles of a compound, we have to divide the given mass in grams of the substance to its molar mass.
moles of phosphoric acid using molar mass 98 g/mol :
moles of phosphoric acid = 658 grams ÷ 98 g/mol (cancel the unit gram)
= 6.714 moles
moles of phosphoric acid using molar mass 97.994 g/mol :
moles of phosphoric acid = 658 grams ÷ 97.994 g/mol (cancel unit g )
= 6.715 moles
Hope it helps...=)
