Wha are the 3 types of carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates, or simply sugars, are important biomolecules to every living organism. They can be in many forms like protective structure in cell walls of plants (cellulose) or in animals (chitin). They also serve as our fuel, like glucose, or in stored form, glycogen.
There are three types of carbohydrates depending on their complexity. These are:
- Monosaccharides - also known as simple sugars. They are composed of a single unit of a sugar, e.g glucose.
- Oligosaccharides - are made up of few units of sugar. This includes dissacharides (2 sugar units), trisaccharides (3 sugar units), and tetrasaccharide (4 sugar units).
- Polysaccharides - these are long chains of sugar. These are usually found in structural sugar like cellulose and chitin.
